Toyota is all set to reveal a brand-new electric vehicle (EV) on March 11. This new model is expected to be the final production version of the 2022 bZ Compact SUV concept. Once launched in international markets, it will become Toyota’s third all-electric model, joining the larger bZ4X and the recently introduced Urban Cruiser EV. Toyota has already announced plans to introduce six new EVs globally by 2026.
Design and Exterior Features
Toyota has shared a teaser image and video of the upcoming EV, showing a silhouette that closely resembles the original concept. The vehicle retains key design elements such as a sloping roofline and an elongated bonnet. The front follows Toyota’s latest ‘hammerhead’ design, while the rear features a sleek lightbar.
Interestingly, the new EV bears similarities to the bZ3C fastback, which was showcased in China last year. This has led to speculation that it might be a version designed for European markets, though there’s no official confirmation yet.
Competing with Volvo C40 Recharge
The size and design of this new EV suggest it will compete with models like the Volvo C40 Recharge and Smart #1. It follows the same footprint as the bZ Compact SUV concept, positioning it in the growing segment of stylish, high-performance electric SUVs.
Battery, Range, and Performance
Like the Urban Cruiser EV, Toyota’s upcoming electric SUV is likely to offer multiple battery options and motor configurations. A key highlight from the teaser video is an ‘AWD’ badge, which hints at an all-wheel-drive variant.
If it follows the Urban Cruiser’s setup, the AWD version might feature motors on both axles, generating around 184hp and 300Nm of torque. This could be paired with a 61kWh battery, offering a driving range of approximately 400km. Lower variants may come with a 49kWh battery and a single 144hp front-mounted motor. Charging speeds could go up to 150kW for fast and efficient
Interior and Technology
Toyota hasn’t revealed the interior yet, but it’s expected to have a design similar to the Toyota C-HR rather than the Urban Cruiser. If so, we can anticipate a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, and a raised center console. Higher trims might include features like a panoramic sunroof and a JBL premium sound system.
What Will It Be Called?
The official name of the new Toyota EV remains unknown. Earlier reports suggested it could be called the bZ3X, positioning it as a smaller alternative to the bZ4X. However, there is also speculation that Toyota might use the Urban Cruiser branding for this model.
