Toto Wolff has admitted that Mercedes is still unsure whether it has resolved a major inconsistency in its Formula 1 car’s performance due to the unusual cold conditions during pre-season testing in Bahrain.
Weather Challenges and Performance Concerns
Over the past year, Mercedes found its car performing significantly better in cooler temperatures, with three of its four wins in 2024 coming at Silverstone, Spa, and Las Vegas—tracks that experienced notably lower temperatures. However, when conditions heated up, the car struggled to extract the same level of performance, particularly in making the tyres work effectively.
Addressing this issue has been a major focus for the team during the off-season. However, the unexpectedly cold and wet weather in Bahrain’s pre-season testing has complicated efforts to evaluate if the changes have worked.
Wolff jokingly remarked: “Well, I’m a bit concerned right now because these are the conditions where we should be two seconds faster than everyone else! That was the only highlight last year in Las Vegas, and we are not seeing that kind of dominance here.”
He continued: “So, either we have successfully fixed the issue and achieved a more balanced performance across different weather conditions, or we haven’t. We’ve had a good laugh about whether we’ve lost our unique strength in cold conditions, but honestly, we don’t know yet.”
Data Challenges and Simulation Limitations
Despite the advanced simulation tools available to F1 teams, Mercedes is still facing challenges in accurately predicting how the car will behave in hotter conditions. While simulation models can adjust data collected from testing to factor in expected temperatures at upcoming races, they cannot perfectly replicate real-world variables such as wind gusts, which impact car stability and handling.
George Russell, who finished second on the opening day of testing, acknowledged these limitations: “You always have to think about what the car’s performance could have been if the temperature was 20 degrees higher or if the wind direction had been completely different.” Strong winds in Bahrain have added another layer of unpredictability, making it harder for teams to draw solid conclusions.

Looking Ahead to the Season
Mercedes’ strong showing on the first day of testing marked its best start in Bahrain’s pre-season sessions under the current regulations. However, whether this signals a more consistent performance throughout the season remains to be seen. The real test will come when the team faces the hotter conditions it struggled with last year.
For now, Mercedes will continue analyzing its data and fine-tuning its understanding of the car’s behavior as the season progresses. Only when racing resumes under varying track temperatures will the team truly know if it has overcome last year’s performance inconsistencies.
